Spartanburg police said they arrested a Jonesville man in connection with a shooting outside Westgate Mall during the weekend.
Antwone Terrance, president of Stackz On Deck Car Club, said the meeting in the parking lot of the mall on Saturday night was supposed to be an introduction party for the club. However, he said the celebration ended when 29-year-old Neal Gray was shot.
Terrance said Gray was trying to diffuse a tense situation after a fight. He said that was when the gunman confronted Gray.
"The guy got an attitude with him, and (Gray) asked him, 'What's going on?'" Terrance said. "The guy pulled out a gun and shot him for no reason."
Terrance said Gray was shot three times - once in the stomach and twice in the chest - by a man who was not a member of his club or any other club at the gathering. He said the gunman had no business being there.
On Tuesday, police said they arrested 26-year-old Maurice Suber in connection with the shooting.
The county jail's website reported that Suber was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He is expected to have a bond hearing Tuesday night.
