Clemson adds ex-Hokie assistant Johnson to staff

CLEMSON, SC (AP) -

Virginia Tech basketball assistant coach James Johnson is joining the coaching staff at Clemson.

Johnson will fill the spot of Rick Ray, who left to become head coach at Mississippi State earlier this month. Johnson had worked at Virginia Tech since 2007 and was elevated to associate head coach before the 2011-2012 season.

Johnson was part of the George Mason staff that helped the school reach the Final Four in 2006.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell said he's known Johnson for a long time and has long been impressed by his work ethic. The Tigers went 16-15 this past season, missing the NCAA tournament for the first time in five years.
