LIBERTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A Liberty High School teacher died Thursday following a horseback riding accident, school district officials say.
English teacher Pam Scott had been at the school about 10 years and previously taught at Gettys Middle School, according to Julie Thompson, Director of Communication Services for the School District of Pickens County.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said Scott, of Seneca, was riding a horse when it stumbled, sending her over the horse's head. He said she landed on her own head and suffered a cervical spinal injury that caused her death.
Scott, who was wearing a helmet, was transported first to AnMed then airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital where she later died, according to Shore.
Thompson said counselors from other district schools and local churches will be at Liberty High today to help administration, staff and students deal with the tragedy.
"Pam touched all of us in many ways," said Lori Gwinn, principal. "She will be missed dearly."
Gwinn said Scott had made plans to retire at the end of this school year and was looking forward to many adventures.
