SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Chesnee man was arrested Thursday after deputies said he struck and shook his girlfriend's 2-year-old son, resulting in brain damage.

Spartanburg County deputies said they were notified by Cherokee County deputies that the abuse happened in Chesnee while the toddler's mom was at work.

Upon their investigation, deputies said Joshua Moton, 23, had struck or shaken the 2-year-old son of his girlfriend, Nicole Dicosola, 24, in such a manner as to cause severe bodily injury to the child, to the point that the injuries are life-threatening.

Moton was taking care of the child and his 4-year-old brother at the time of the incident, deputies say.

According to deputies, the child was first transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center then later transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Doctors told deputies that the child's injuries were extremely life-threatening, which were caused from blunt force trauma or shaking, which required surgery to remove part of his skull to release the pressure on his brain due to the swelling and bleeding.

Deputies said Moton was charged with felony child abuse and the child's mother was charged with child neglect because she left him with Moton, knowing there were previous accusations of Moton injuring the children while in his care.

Moton was being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center on $30,000 bond, while Dicosola was being held on a $10,000 bond.

The children have been placed in the care of the maternal grandmother by the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
