'Operation 420' leads to 31 arrests on I-85

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Four days of intense patrolling on Interstate 85 lead the Anderson County Sheriff's Department to drug seizures, car chases and arrests.

This was the first time Anderson County hosted their own special project called Operation 420. The title, they said, is based on the date it ended and the idea that it's known as a national day to smoke marijuana.

This week's stops left some drivers smokeless.

Operation 420 put many more deputies on Anderson County's 40-mile stretch of I-85 for four straight days. There are usually just two patrolling for twelve hours at a time.

"We're trying to reduce the fatalities and the accidents," said Sgt. Jamie Crawford, "and while doing that, seek out those trying to sneak in contraband, be it drugs, weapons, bulk U.S. currency, counterfeit goods. Trying to seek those individuals out."

During this week, the Catch Team confiscated 15 pounds of marijuana, 11 ounces of cocaine, $6,000 in cash, guns and other drugs.

Crawford said his team started three car chases, one of which ended in Greenville, with the driver, Lesley McWhorter, ending up in jail on attempted murder charges. She's accused of backing her car into the deputy.

Crawford said there were many people who were wanted on other charges that were stopped and arrested, including one man who was wanted on four counts of attempted murder elsewhere in the state.

Crawford said there were no wrecks on I-85 this week.
