A Gaffney teenager is accused of robbing one local store at gunpoint and trying to rob another, deputies say.

Cherokee County deputies said they arrested Rashawn Wheeler, 19, on Thursday after he was found with marijuana in his possession. They said he admitted his involvement in two robberies during interviews on Friday.

The first robbery happened at the Highway 150 Food Mart on Pacolet Highway in Gaffney about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. Deputies said Wheeler used a silver handgun and got away with $300 cash.

The attempted robbery happened about 11:40 a.m. Thursday at the Handy Hut Food Mart on Old Georgia Highway in Gaffney. Deputies said Wheeler was startled by a second employee and fled before taking any money.

Investigators said Wheeler showed them where he hid his pistol after admitting to his involvement in the robberies.

Wheeler was charged with simple possession of marijuana, armed robbery, attempted armed robbery. He was also charged with financial transaction card fraud after deputies said Wheeler used someone's debit card without their permission earlier in April.

Wheeler was being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
