SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Spartanburg police are asking some restaurant patrons to check their receipts after a waitress is accused of tipping herself more than what customers intended.
Police said they were told by a Myrtle Beach man who had eaten at Kanpai of Tokyo that he noticed his bank statement did not match his receipt from the meal.
Investigators said that since then they have found other instances where money was added to a customer's bill without their knowledge. They said the waitress targeted people who paid with debit and credit cards.
The manager of the restaurant said they have fired the waitress.
"We want to apologize to our customers who have been affected by this," said Kanpai's management in a statement to FOX Carolina. "The employee was terminated immediately upon discovery of the thefts. We are working with detectives throughout this investigation."
The waitress is expected to turn herself in to authorities Tuesday. Until that happens, FOX Carolina has opted to withhold her identity.
Police said anyone who believes they may have been a victim of the scheme should call the Spartanburg Public Safety Department at 864-596-2222.
