GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Would you pay $50 for a light bulb? What about $20 or $10 if they promised to last a lot longer and cut your electricity bill?

In 2014, all incandescent light bulbs above 40 watts will be banned, so companies are doing what they can now to get the market ready with new options.

The newest, most state-of-the art is by Phillips and costs $50 each, and that's already discounted.

It claims the lighting effect is natural and that the bulb will last more than 20 years.

Some people think that's a good deal if it works.

Energy companies say lighting is often the biggest cost in people's electric bills, and even they're on board with saving energy. We spoke with Duke Energy spokesman Jason Walls via Skype from Charlotte. He said he's seen a difference with even just the compact fluorescent bulbs.

"If you think about the electric industry across the country," said Walls, "the cost of electricity is going up, so there's never been a more important time for customers to think about how they're using electricity, and how they can use it smarter and really save a lot each month."
