Police investigate abuse after toddler found covered in bruises

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said a 2-year-old girl was brought to the emergency room by her grandmother, who noticed she was beaten and bruised.

The girl's grandmother told police this was the second time her granddaughter had been to the emergency room in a week and fearing for her granddaughter's safety, she called police.

The grandmother told police the first time her granddaughter was taken to the hospital was for a large bruise on her forehead.

Reports said a few days later while in the grandmother's care, the little girl began complaining about pain in her arms and legs, that's when the grandmother discovered bruises all over her body.

Because of the nature of the injuries and the age of the victim, police were called to the emergency room, where they launched their investigation.

Capt. Regina Nowak, with Spartanburg Public Safety, said police interviewed two people regarding this case of abuse but no one has been arrested.

Nowak said one of the people they've questioned was just released from prison after being convicted of child abuse. She said cases like these are especially difficult for officers to investigate.

"We obviously take it seriously. I know the investigator working this case takes it personally," said Nowak. "We want to see it through and make sure the right person is charged."

The abused child and her five siblings have been taken into protective custody.

"The child is not in danger at this point, and we will continue to work this case until we can bring it to closure," said Nowak.
