A man walking along train tracks near Greenwood was hit and killed by a train Monday night, deputies said.
Greenwood Sheriff Tony Davis said the train was traveling east out of Greenwood and as it was going down the tracks, the engineer spotted a guy walking in the middle of the tracks between Kateway and Evans Pond Road between 8 and 9 p.m.
Davis said the engineer blew the whistle and hit breaks in plenty of time, but the victim never moved and it was too late.
The man never reacted to the whistle and was walking with back to train, according to Davis.
The Greenwood County Coroner's Office said the victim was Ngoni Mafemera, 26, of Greenwood.
The coroner said an autopsy confirmed Mafemera died from blunt force trauma. They are waiting on toxicology reports to be performed by the Stale Law Enforcement Division.
