SALUDA, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters and rescue crews said they were working to recover the body of a missing hiker in Polk County Thursday morning.

Polk County rescue said they were helping the Saluda Fire Department with the search at Big Bradley Falls, which is near Saluda.

Henderson County rescue officials said they were also assisting in the search. They said the hiker was missing since Tuesday about 6 p.m., and they were called in Wednesday night to help search until dark, and they resumed this morning.

Saluda Fire Deputy Chief Zach Pace said they found the body about 2 or 3 a.m. Thursday after searching for several hours but postponed the recovery until daylight.

Rescuers said due to the rain they were concerned about slipping and loose rocks. They said it would take until at least late in the afternoon to bring the body back to the staging area, which was about two miles away.

"It's just gonna be a dangerous situation for all our guys and the main focus for us is just to keep our guys safe and for safety of us," said Pace. "Especially with the weather that's just came through and everything it's slick and we're just trying to keep all our guys safe."

Officials said it looked like the hiker fell. They have not yet released the hiker's identity.
