ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Ohio pilot was killed when his plane crashed during training exercises at the Anderson Regional Airport early Friday afternoon.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said that about 1 p.m. a Cirrus aircraft went off the end of runway 17 at the airport.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Pete Knudson said the plane was performing touch-and-go maneuvers when the nose pitched up and then hit the ground. He said the aircraft burst into flames, killing the pilot.

Airport manager Steven Vibbard said there were two people on board the plane just before the crash happened.

"The plane did come in, let one of the guys off, he was a friend of the guy that perished in the accident," Vibbard said. "He let him off to come into the facility here, and he went back into the pattern, made one pass and something happened and he crashed into the field."

"I happened to look over my shoulder, and I saw the airplane come in, touch down, and it just went back up, and it looked like the wind caught it," said a witness to the crash.

Taylor Jones, spokesman for Anderson County Emergency Management, said that three bystanders, one of which was the pilot's friend, tried to rescue the pilot from the fiery crash. He said all three men were taken to a local hospital for treatment, and one of the men suffered burns.

"They made a very heroic attempt to rescue the gentleman right after the incident occurred," Jones said.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore identified the victim as 58-year-old William Hayden, of Cincinnati, OH. Hayden has a mountain home in Tuxedo, NC. He leaves behind a wife and three grown children.

Shore said Hayden died from blunt force trauma during the crash.

Hayden's friend sustained second degree burns. Shore said he was taken to the hospital, treated, and released.
