HARVEST, AL (WAFF) -
When power and communications were knocked out last April, local amateur HAM Radio operators stepped in to help.
The Huntsville Amateur Radio club held a special event to commemorate the anniversary of the April tornados Saturday.
They set up a portable station in Harvest that ran on a generator.
In the aftermath of the storms, HAM Radio operators provided a go-between for emergency communications.
"We wanted to recognize and have a remembrance of what happened one year ago to make people more weather aware," said Stanley Cole, a HAM radio operator. "To keep what happened here it in the news so people would think about it and prepare."
The Huntsville Amateur Radio club meets ever Friday night at the Red Cross Center on Church Street in Huntsville.
