A Union man was arrested Sunday night after deputies said he held his estranged wife captive for 12 hours and severely beat her.

Investigators said that about 6:15 p.m. Sunday the woman flagged down a passing deputy. She told the deputy that she had been held against her will since early Saturday afternoon at the home of Charles Bishop. She said she was able to escape when he fell asleep.

Deputies said the woman was taken to Wallace Thomson Hospital for treatment of her injuries, including a bloody lip, bruising and swelling on her head and arms and a deep cut to her right hand. They said the woman also had a shoe print on the left side of her face.

Investigators said they then went to Bishop's home on Old English Road and arrested him. He was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and simple possession of marijuana.
