ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
When Amy Cheek found a letter stuck in her apartment door, she didn't know what to think.
"It's like oh no, not one more thing to have to stop and pack," she said.
She said she received the letter from management at the Hanover Ridge Apartment complex in Anderson. It was a notice that the property is closing and she has to move out.
"I did see a sign on the door saying they weren't taking leases, but I just assumed they were full," she said.
She and others who live at the complex attended a meeting at the Westside Community Center Tuesday night to try and get some answers.
"When you plan on moving, you plan on saving and try and find the best deal and everything," she said.
And she said the deal management put on the table would give residents some financial assistance. They have until Sept. 1, 2012, to find a new place and depending on the number of rooms in an apartment, they could get $3,500 to $4,500 to help with the move.
FOX Carolina talked to Bern DuPree, the regional property director with Vista Capital, a company that manages Hanover Ridge.
"The owners are committed to assisting all of the residents in ensuring a smooth transition to their new homes," he said.
And although Cheek is grateful to get some financial assistance, she said she's worried she won't find something just as affordable.
Residents said during the meeting they were told they would have to continue paying rent until Sept. 1 in order to get financial assistance.
Some people who live at the complex said they were told buildings on the property would be torn down. The owners of the property, Hanover Ridge Limited, is expected to release a statement Wednesday.
