SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Five warrants were signed Tuesday for registered sex offenders in Spartanburg County who deputies say didn't check in like they were supposed to this past month or weren't around when officers randomly checked in on them.
It happens every month, and sheriff's officials say they take it seriously.
The sheriff's office is where registered sex offenders in Spartanburg County show up either twice a year or four times a year, depending on their criminal convictions, to update their registry.
Spokesman Lt. Tony Ivey said they verify where they are living and where they work. If offenders fail to check in, they will be arrested.
"We go out and we start looking for them as soon as those warrants are written," said Ivey.
Ivey said the warrants for these offenders are a high priority and that deputies begin searching for them immediately. The three men who did not show up to re-register in April are David Whitfield, Walter Browning and Howard Gimbel. We're told this is Browning's second time not showing since he was arrested in 1994 for a lewd act on a minor. Deputies said Gimbel needs to check in four times a year because he is on the highest level in the registry, after a 1994 sex crime with a child who was younger than 11.
Two different men also have warrants against them this month for failing to report a change of address.
Spartanburg County alone has almost 470 registered sex offenders. The sheriff's office has full-time staff checking up on them.
