PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

City officials issued a boil water advisory for Pickens residents as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after a water main broke.

City Administrator Katherine Brackett said the advisory was a precautionary measure as crews were working to repair the broken main.

All water customers are urged to vigorously boil water for at least one full minute prior to drinking or cooking. Additionally, ice made from water that has not been boiled should not be used for drinking purposes.

Customers will be notified when the advisory is lifted, Brackett said.

Per the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control recommendations, appliances and equipment that use drinkable water such as dish washers, ice machines, water fountains, coffee makers, etc., should be discontinued.

Disposable products like plastic utensils and paper plates should be used instead. Residents should wash hands with boiled then cooled water, along with washing other kitchen-related items.

Affected residents with questions can call the Pickens Water Department at 864-878-7201.
