Laurens police said they have arrested a man who held a knife to a store clerk's throat and then stabbed her hands during a robbery early Thursday morning.

The robbery happened about 12:30 a.m. at the Lil Cricket at 100 Terrys Park Rd.

According to an incident report, Richard Evans, 48, also known as "Chilly Pop," walked into the store, picked a beer from a cooler and then grabbed the clerk from behind. The report said Evans then put a knife to the clerk's throat and dragged her to a storage room. He then stabbed at the clerk with her keys, cutting her hands, according to the report.

In addition to the cuts on her hands, she also suffered cuts to her neck, police said. She was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital to be treated.

Police said that surveillance video then shows Evans leaving the storage room and then taking a pack of cigarettes and cash from the register. They said Evans then stole the clerk's sport utility vehicle and fled the scene.

The stolen vehicle was found abandoned a short time later, police said. They said the cigarettes stolen during the robbery and the knife used in the holdup were found in the vehicle.

Evans was arrested and charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle and attempted murder.
