PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Greenville County deputies said a man was shot in the buttocks while he was trying to break into a home Tuesday morning.
Deputies said the homeowner caught the suspect trying to break into a Lindley Road home about 8 a.m. and fired a shot at the man, scaring him off.
According to the 911 call, deputies said the suspect was attempting to burglarize the home when the homeowner confronted the suspect at gunpoint and temporarily detained him at gunpoint. However, the suspect eventually fled.
Deputies said the victim had stopped by the house this morning to check on it because it was vacant, belonging to his deceased mother, and that is when he found the man coming out of the home.
As the suspect fled the scene, the homeowner fired one shot at the suspect, deputies said. They said the victim was hit by the fired shot.
Before he was located, the male suspect was last seen near Piedmont Highway wearing a black T-shirt and was described as about 30 years old, with a goatee, 5'10" tall and weighs 210 pounds, deputies said.
Deputies had EMS standing by at the incident location. They said they called off the search about 10:15 a.m. after looking for the suspect with the use of search dogs.
About 11:20 a.m., deputies said they received a call after the man was found near Dyer Lane and Long Road. He was arrested and transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, deputies said.
FOX Carolina spoke to neighbors who said a woman spotted the suspect while walking along Long Road. They said the man spoke to her and was bleeding, so she called 911.
Deputies said 39-year-old James Atkinson, of Liberty, was charged with first-degree burglary and petit larceny. They said during his arrest he had a gun near him, but it was not known if the victim knew if he was armed at the time of the burglary.
Deputies said Atkinson stole property worth less than $2,000 from the Lindley Road residence.
Officials at Piedmont Christian Academy said they put the school on lockdown about 9 a.m. because of the nearby search. The school is located off Piedmont Highway on Oil Mill Road.
Drivers in the area were re-routed as deputies blocked off some roads, including Lindley Road and Roosevelt Drive at Piedmont Highway.
