SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Spartanburg couple was accused of child neglect after deputies said they discovered their home was infested with roaches, had a strong odor coming from inside and was covered in trash.

Deputies said they were called to the Goldmine Road home on Monday in reference to a domestic dispute between the couple, 23-year-old Samantha Burgess and 27-year-old Cory Dunn.

While deputies were at the Spartanburg County home about 12:45 a.m., they said they noticed the home was covered in roaches, with the bugs crawling out of the wall and carpets.

Neither Burgess nor Dunn were charged in connection with the domestic dispute because deputies said there was not enough evidence, but there was enough evidence to charge both of them with four counts each of neglect of a child/helpless person.

Deputies said while standing on the porch outside of the home, the odor coming from inside was so strong it was hard to inhale. When they entered the home, one of the deputies said what he saw was the worst he had seen in 11 years of his career.

When deputies went to check on the children, one of them moved the blanket covering one of the kids, and about 30 roaches scattered from under it, according to the incident report. The children ranged from age 1 to 7.

Deputies said the children were placed with their grandparents when Burgess and Dunn were arrested.

Burgess was released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond. Dunn was still being held at the jail on a $2,000 bond.
