She dried our tears, sometimes caused them, and drove us crazy while simultaneously loving us more than anyone else on earth. On Mother's Day, we celebrate moms everywhere.

You might call Anna Jarvis the mother of Mother's Day. In 1907, she organized an observance at her Grafton, WV church in memory of her late mother. The observance, held on the second Sunday in May - the anniversary of her mother's death - would spawn the first official Mother's Day celebration a year later in Grafton and in Philadelphia.

Over the next few years, Jarvis campaigned tirelessly for a national day to honor all moms.

In 1914, Congress selected the second Sunday in May - the anniversary of Jarvis' mother's passing - as Mother's Day.

Here's a look at Mother's Day, by the numbers.

85.4 million - Number of moms in the U.S. in 2009, the latest year with available statistics.

133 million - Number of Mother's Day cards exchanged annually, making it the third largest holiday for sending cards behind Valentine's (144 million) and Christmas (1.6 billion). That averages out to 1.5 cards per mom.

58 - Number of hours salary.com estimates working moms spend a week outside the office, doing their most important job - parenting.

5 million - Number of stay at home moms in 2011

44 - Percent of working moms who, in a survey by The Ladders, said the ability to choose "flexible working hours" is the most important part of her work environment.
