Deputies: Thieves target homes under construction

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Homes under construction in Greenville County have been targeted by copper thieves, deputies said.

Greenville County deputies said multiple homes in the same area in Simpsonville have been hit by thieves taking thousands of dollars worth of copper and other valuable appliances.

Deputy Matthew Armstrong said one of those homes on Bentwater Trail has been burglarized twice in the last month.

The first theft happened between April 13 and 18, when deputies said someone stole copper wiring from seven to eight rooms in the home, valued between $4,000 and $5,000, deputies said.

The same home was hit again between 8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to deputies. They said the wiring had just been re-installed after the previous theft, taking $8,500 worth of copper wiring the second time.

A Bentwater Lane home had brand new A/C units stolen worth $4,000 sometime between 5:30 p.m. on Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday, deputies said.

Armstrong said sites like these are easy targets for criminals because during any given day and time, there are multiple contractors in and around the structures, so it may be difficult for a neighbor to tell between "normal" and "suspicious" activity.

Criminals often have easy access to these homes because they are not normally secured until they are almost finished, Armstrong said.

Anyone with information about these cases is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME.
