BREVARD, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Crews in Transylvania County spent much of Wednesday searching for a Georgia man who has been missing since May 5.

Dennis Boyd, of Columbia County, GA, near Augusta, was reported missing by his brother on May 8, officials said.

Investigators said that a deputy in Polk County, NC, found Boyd the next day while investigating a stranded vehicle. They said Boyd told the deputy he was driving to Nashville, TN, to visit a friend. They said the deputy saw no reason to hold Boyd, so he let him go.

On Tuesday, investigators in Columbia County said they were called by Transylvania County deputies, who said that Boyd's car was found abandoned off Route 215 near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

On Wednesday, deputies, U.S. Forest Service crews and local firefighters fanned out in the dense forest near where Boyd's car was found, but did not find him.

Columbia County investigators said Boyd's son told them that his father had taken a shotgun and left behind his bipolar medication and his cell phone.
