GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A Greenville County deputy shot and killed a man investigators said put a knife to a woman's throat Monday afternoon.
Deputies said that about 2:30 p.m. they were called to 213 Brockman Ave. about a dispute that was under way. They said that while they were responding to the scene, they were told the man and woman involved in the dispute had gotten in a vehicle and left the scene.
Investigators said the deputies spotted the vehicle and noticed that the man had a knife to the woman's neck. They said that deputies stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Draper and Abney streets.
Deputies said that when they ordered the man to drop the knife, he lunged at the woman while still holding the knife to her neck. They said the deputy closest to him fired several shots, killing the knife-wielding man.
Greenville County coroners have identified the man involved as 56-year-old David Hampton, of Greenville.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Deputies said the woman was not hurt.
The deputy was placed on administrative duty while the shooting is under investigation, deputies said.
