CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Coca-Cola 600 is set for this Sunday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte.

Ahead of NASCAR's only 600-mile race, Charlotte Motor Speedway officials allowed FOX Carolina's Will Jones to see if he has what it takes to compete in the race.

Larry McReynolds, one of NASCAR's most famous crew chiefs, was there to coach Will along the way.

McReynolds advised Will to stay on the asphalt of the race track and everything will be good.

He said be prepared to go fast.

"I'm hoping you have never run this fast on the highway," said McReynolds, who is now a race analyst. "When you think about it, you're going to run almost three times as fast as interstate speed."

McReynolds said racecar drivers don't get the respect that they deserve. He said some people will never look at drivers as athletes.

McReynolds said he would encourage the critics to get in their cars, roll up the windows in the summer and turn the heat on high. He said then they should find a crowded interstate and drive as fast as they can. McReynolds said they should not lift their foot off the throttle.

"I think those people who challenge racecar drivers as athletes, I think that will put that question to bed," he said.
