An Inman man charged in the deadly accident that killed a Byrnes High School student in 2011 pleaded guilty in court Thursday, getting seven years in prison plus probation.
Michael White, 28, was charged with felony DUI resulting in death along with three counts of felony DUI resulting in great injury following the deadly crash.
In April 2011, investigators said White was intoxicated when he caused a crash that killed one teenager and seriously injured three others. At the time of the accident, White was driving with a suspended license, officials said.
On Thursday, White pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and battery first degree and reckless homicide. The judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison, which was suspended to seven years plus five years probation, and he was credited for the 13 months served since his arrest last year.
Investigators said 18-year-old Aaron Hill was killed in the crash on Highway 129 in Wellford. Hill was on his way to school when the vehicle he was driving was hit.
White apologized in court to Hill's family before he was sentenced.
Julie Hill, the mother of Aaron Hill, said she wasn't happy with the sentence. She said she wanted White to spend 40 years in prison.
"I'm very outraged," Hill said. "I think justice wasn't served here today."
Hill died on the same portion of highway that was named after his father, U.S. Army Sgt. Shawn Hill. Sgt. Hill was killed while serving in Afghanistan.
