PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) -

Rhode Island police have arrested a man they said escaped from a South Carolina prison facility on Christmas Day more than three decades ago.

State police said Thursday that authorities are taking 65-year-old Armin Christian back to South Carolina. He was arraigned in District Court in Providence on Wednesday.

Christian had been living in Bristol. He was arrested and charged with escaping a correctional facility.

A South Carolina prisons spokesman said Christian walked away from the now defunct Piedmont Work Center near Greenville on Christmas Day in 1980.

Christian was sentenced to 11 months in prison in November 1980 for domestic non-payment of child support.

Rhode Island State Police Capt. Michael Winquist said Christian told authorities that he was trying to straighten out matters in South Carolina.
