SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Spartanburg County man said he found a death thread in a note taped to his door Monday afternoon.

The man, who did not want to be identified, showed FOX Carolina the note that read, in part:

"This is for the slow dude that live here. I will kill you, boy. Chuck Wright has give the OK on people like you."

The man said he believes the threat is directed at his nephew, who suffers from schizophrenia. He said the letter accuses his nephew of hanging around the writer's home.

In October, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, to whom the note refers, encouraged women to protect themselves by getting a concealed weapons permit. The remarks came after a woman was raped in Miliken Park.

However, Wright said he never encouraged anyone to break the law.

"I made gun comments based on the fact that you should use that as the absolute last resort to survive," Wright said. "I also said, too, that everybody doesn't deserve guns."

Wright said only those who are legally allowed to own guns should get a permit. He said those people should be trained at shooting ranges.

As for situations that are not life or death, Wright said there's always other options besides drawing a gun.

"There's nothing wrong with running away," Wright said. "There's nothing wrong with driving away. There's nothing wrong at all with dialing 911."

The man on who's door the note was found said he's concerned that the person who penned the threat did not get that message.

Wright said deputies are trying to determine who wrote the note.
