GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -
During a Memorial Day ceremony, a Gaffney bridge was renamed in honor of a fallen Marine.
Lance Cpl. Chris Fowlkes, 20, was killed in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device in September 2009. He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion.
Fowlkes was a graduate of Gaffney High School.
The ceremony took place at the county administration building on North Limestone Street. A sign was unveiled naming the interchange at exit 92 on Interstate 85 the "Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Fowlkes Memorial Interchange."
Steve Fowlkes, the father of Lance Cpl. Fowlkes, said Memorial Day was a perfect day to honor his son.
"Today is to remember our fallen veterans and what a more fitting day than to memorialize a piece of 85 with his name," he said.
