GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Next time you decide to swim in a public pool, take a look around, because chances are there are quite a few people there who pee in the pool.

According to a study from the Water Quality and Healthy Council, 17 percent of people, about one out of five, say they have urinated in the water before.

According to the council, peeing in the pool is a lose-lose proposition because:

  • Swimmer urine depletes chlorine that would otherwise be available to destroy waterborne germs.
  • Chlorine reacts with urine to produce compounds called chloramines that irritate the eyes and skin of swimmers.

The council has a few recommendations for swimmers:

  • Don't pee in the pool.
  • Take a shower before going into pool.
  • Do not pee in the pool.
  • Take a shower after going into pool.
  • Please, don't pee in the pool.
