TRAVELERS REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A clerk at a Travelers Rest hotel and his friend were arrested Monday after police said the pair tried to rape a guest.

Police said they responded to the Hampton Inn at 525 Roe Center Court early Monday morning after a guest heard a woman screaming in the hallway and called 911.

According to an incident report, Christopher McCall, 26, of Marietta, was working the night shift at the hotel when a woman walked in and asked for the cheapest room. The report said that McCall told the woman she could have the room for free, and after discussing the matter with his friend, Christopher Debusk, 26, of Travelers Rest, who was standing behind the counter with him, created two keys for the woman's room. The report said that McCall gave the woman one key and kept the other.

The report said that a few minutes after entering her room, the woman heard someone trying to use a key at the door, and after looking through the peephole, opened the door to find McCall and Debusk standing in the hall. The report said that the men told the woman they needed to do a maintenance check of her room, so she stepped into the hall while the men were inside.

After a few minutes, the men began acting strangely and asked the woman to step inside the room so they could ask her a question, according to the incident report. The report said the woman refused, and that was when McCall lunged at her, grabbed her and tried to pull her inside the room.

The report said the woman was able to break free and ran down the hall, screaming for help. That was when McCall and Debusk fled the scene, the report said.

Police said that McCall was arrested later after he returned to the scene. They said Debusk was arrested later arrested by Greenville County deputies.

Both men were being held in jail without bond on charges of first-degree assault and battery and kidnapping.
