SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Spartanburg police said a child was alone in the parking lot of a movie theater Monday afternoon.
Police said that just after 5 p.m. they were called to 1640 John B. White Sr. Blvd. after a woman said she found a 4-year-old boy running around the parking lot by himself. The woman said she had caught the child and brought him inside the theater to wait for police.
According to an incident report, the child was wearing a yellow-and-blue-colored coat, blue jeans and shoes that were on the wrong feet. He appeared to have been un-bathed for some time, the report said.
Police said that about two hours after the boy was found, his mother called police looking for him.
"When the mother actually called, she stated that he was autistic," said Capt. Regina Nowak, of the Spartanburg Public Safety Department.
Nowak said the mother told police that she had put the boy down for a nap and that her 17-year-old daughter was supposed to be watching him.
Once the mother found out that police had her son, she stopped talking, Nowak said.
"I think she felt like it was going to be used to bring charges against her," Nowak said. "So, she did not want to cooperate."
Nowak said the boy will remain in protective custody until investigators determine how he ended up in the parking lot.
