GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Just being able to sit up and hold a conversation means Louise Thompson is getting better because she has suffered from a flesh-eating bacterial infection for weeks.

"I just really thought that I wasn't going to live," said Thompson.

That's because about two months ago, a sore area on her leg turned into much more.

"I didn't have a blemish or a pimple or nothing," she said.

On Friday, Thompson said back then the pain felt like pins sticking her skin. So, she went to a doctor in Simpsonville and found out she had necrotizing fasciitis, a skin infection caused by bacteria.

"I had never heard of it," said Thompson.

Doctors said the flesh-eating bacteria attacks soft tissue and muscle. That's what it did to Thompson's leg, and she said doctors had to perform surgery.

"And the place that was cut out was the size of a regular football," Thompson said.

Thompson lay in a coma for five days, fought her way through ICU and awoke in a room  at the Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital in Greenville.

"They say the community is not right without me," Thompson said with a smile.

Thompson then pointed to the hospital wall that is decorated with balloons, scripture and cards. She said she now looks at life differently.

"I won't ever ignore something that's sore anymore," Thompson said.

Thompson said she appreciates the support from doctors, friends and family. She even stood up for the first time in months on Friday and said she hopes her next move is out of the hospital.

"I've got to get back home," Thompson said.
