DONALDS, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the Donalds Fire Department at the request of the Abbeville County Sheriff's Office after thousands of dollars was reported missing from the department.
According to incident reports obtained from the Abbeville County Sheriff's Office, a member of the department spent more than $14,000 of the department's money between October 2011 and May 2012.
The incident reports state a local bank notified the county's Fire Marshal about suspicious activity on the department's debit card.
The Abbeville County Sheriff's Office said the Donalds Fire Chief confronted the individual they believe is responsible for the missing money and he admitted to spending the money but couldn't recall on what.
The man promised to pay back the money and commissioners confirm with FOX Carolina that the money has in fact been paid back.
Abbeville County Chief Deputy Marion Johnson said even though the money has been paid back, "Still the report was made and the investigation will continue."
Johnson said anytime misuse of public funds is alleged, it hurts the image of all public servants.
FOX Carolina also uncovered this isn't the first time the Donalds Fire Department has been in trouble. Back in 2010 a member of the same department was convicted for stealing equipment and money from the department.
"I think there is a problem maybe with some of the people they are putting in positions there," explained Chief Deputy Johnson.
FOX Carolina tried to get in contact with the Donalds Fire Department Chief, but he was out of town at a convention.
