UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate widow said a Jonesville man stole money from her late husband, right after he died.

Richard McBride, 35, was charged with financial fraud by Union police.

Peggy Parham was married to Ellis Parham for 24 years. He died in April and she said that's when she discovered a $3,000 insurance policy gone. She had to borrow money to bury her husband.

She later discovered money missing from her deceased husband's account and called police.

Investigators in Union said McBride was accused of taking the money. They said McBride took it the day after Ellis Parham died by pretending to be his son and used his debit card.

Parham said her husband was friends with McBride for nearly three years and even lived with him on and off during that time.

"I just can't believe he would do this to my husband. He would do anything for Richard," Parham said.

Parham claimed McBride accepted money from him over the years, but said to hear that he allegedly took money the day after her husband died is like a slap in her face.

McBride is behind bars at the Union County Jail. His bond has been set at $10,000.
