GREENVILLE, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

On Thursday, both the Clemson Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks praised their athletes for success in the classroom this year.

South Carolina said the football team achieved the highest semester grade-point average ever of 2.781 in the recently finished spring semester. The Gamecocks set a program record with 11 victories last fall.

Men's track and field also had its best-ever showing this spring with a 3.269 GPA.

South Carolina said the school's athletes also had their best overall showing with a 3.202 GPA.

Fourteen of the athletic department's 17 teams had grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. That included the baseball team at 3.052. Gamecock baseball is taking part in the College World Series.

Men's golf had the highest team average at 3.526. The highest women's team was volleyball at 3.493.

Clemson said that its football and golf programs ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation in academic progress.

This is the second-straight year for head football coach Dabo Swinney's team to be ranked among the top. He said the achievement shows the team's commitment to academics.

"One of the things we talk about with our players is developing to the best of their abilities in every area," Swinney said. "We have had consistency when it comes to graduation rate and academic progress."

The Clemson golf team had an all-time high grade point average of 3.23 this year.
