OMAHA, NE (AP/FOX Carolina) -

After having a day of rest because of rain, the Gamecocks won two crucial games Thursday against Kent State and Arkansas to stay in the fight for a third-consecutive national championship.

Thursday night, South Carolina's Jordan Montgomery pitched a strong game along with closer Matt Price to help secure the must-needed win against the Razorbacks. The Gamecocks won 2-0.

Earlier in the day, Michael Roth and Gamecocks won 4-1 against Kent State in Omaha, NE, setting up the first two must-win games against Arkansas.

South Carolina's dream of a third consecutive College World Series title is not over. They will return to the field Friday to play Arkansas one more time.

Thursday night's game was Arkansas' first loss, and they must lose twice to South Carolina before they are eliminated.

Earlier Thursday, Roth pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight and walked none. He retired 22 in a row after giving up Sawyer Polen's RBI single in the second inning.

Grayson Greiner and Chase Vergason hit consecutive RBI singles in the second inning to erase Kent State's 1-0 lead. LB Dantzler homered in the third against Tyler Skulina.

Kent State finished 1-2 in its first CWS appearance.

A line of showers moved into the area about an hour before the game was scheduled to start Wednesday night. Radar indicated the rain would continue into the evening so the game was played Thursday at 12 p.m. ET.

According to the Omaha World-Herald, rain on June 20 was nothing new. It was the third straight year in which rain forced a shakeup in the schedule requiring all or parts of three games to be played on June 21.

The winner of the Arkansas/South Carolina bracket will face Arizona who beat Florida State Thursday night, going 3-0 during the series.
