Happy Friday! It's been a warm and muggy morning, and temperatures will stay on the hot side as we go through the day today. Upstate highs will reach the low to mid 90s, while WNC temperatures will rise into the upper 80s. I think we'll see our high temperatures during the early to mid afternoon - as storm chances increase by late-afternoon the rain will cool off some areas.
The rain showers and t-storms will develop as a cold front moves into the area. This front will help to trigger scattered showers/storms as early as 1 or 2 PM in the higher elevations of WNC. Upstate areas will most likely stay dry through the mid-afternoon, with thunderstorm chances bumping up by around 4 or 5 PM.
Not everyone will see the rain today, but I think we'll see more coverage than we've had over the past few afternoons (our POPs are around 40-50%). Any storm could produce very heavy rainfall rates and frequent lightning, so please keep that in mind if you've got golf or swimming plans. While the severe threat isn't very high today, there is the possibility that a strong storm or two could produce some gusty winds.
As we lose the heat of the day and get into the late-evening and overnight hours, precip will begin to taper off... although the overnight will stay warm and muggy. Rain chances will go down for the weekend (I'd only expect an isolated PM shower on Saturday and Sunday) - so it will be all about the continued heat and humidity.
Upstate highs this weekend will be in the low/mid 90s, while Mountain areas will stay in the upper 80s. Monday will bring the highest heat of the week, as temps will rise to around 95° at GSP and near-90° at AVL. A cold frontal passage on Monday will drop us a few degrees through the middle of next week, but even near-normal temperatures will be very warm.
Have a great weekend!!
