Powdersville is an area known for some unusual sightings.

Back in March, neighbors said they spotted a prowling panther in the community. Representatives with the Department of Natural Resources said the animal turned out to be a creeping coyote.

And on Friday on Blackbird Lane, Howard Brockway saw something in his backyard.

"I said, they'll never believe me," said Howard Brockway.

He said that it wasn't that big.

"It was about 140 pounds," said Howard Brockway.

But it was big enough to scare his daughter, Jennifer Brockway.

"There was a black bear running up through our backyard," said Jennifer Brockway.

Jennifer Brockway said she never thought she would see a black bear on Blackbird Lane.

"He ran back down the hill up into those trees over there," said Jennifer Brockway.

She said her 7-year-old daughter Jakira had just shut down her lemonade stand when an unwelcome visitor showed up.

They said they shut their doors and turned on their cameras and took a picture of a bear cub in a tree.

That's when they called DNR and Tom Swayngham, a wildlife biologist, showed up.

"Most of them are young animals that have been run off by their mother when she's getting ready to go into her next reproduction cycle," said Swayngham.

And although some say Powdersville seems to be the mini wild kingdom of the Upstate, Swayngham said it's not true.

"We have not been able to document any lions or tigers," said Swayngham.

But, oh my, there are bears.

DNR representatives said don't leave trash, dog and cat food, or bird feeders exposed in your yard. They said bears are attracted to those items because they are usually looking for food.
