Damage from Tuesday's fire at the Anderson Boys & Girls Club. (June 26, 2012/FOX Carolina)
ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Arson investigators were called to the Boys and Girls Club on Evergreen Street in Anderson early Tuesday morning, after fire broke out just after 4 a.m.
Firefighters said they arrived to the building engulfed in flames. Crews were able to get the flames out but the fire is considered suspicious, according to Anderson Fire Chief Billy Gibson. Firefighters said most of fire damage is in the gymnasium.
The building has been unoccupied since a fire in November 2010 left significant water and smoke damage. Investigators said someone burglarized the club, taking Christmas gifts and recently purchased computers for the computer lab, before setting the fire.
Two men were charged in that case, according to law enforcement in Anderson.
Gibson said they officially ruled the fire an arson. It is still unclear how Tuesday morning's fire started but Gibson said it began in the gym near some bleachers.
There are no suspects at this time. Anyone with information to called the fire department at 260-4016 or Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
