SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters said a campfire sparked a blaze on a Lake Keowee island Wednesday morning that appeared massive in the night sky.

Oconee County firefighters spend the early morning hours battling the fire and said they believe some embers from a campfire blew into nearby brush and sparked the flames.

The fire chief said it appeared the fire was contained mainly to some undergrowth on the island.

Firefighters were first called to the fire about midnight, but they said though the flames were high only the undergrowth was damaged and about a fifth of the island burned.

The island is one of the larger ones on the lake located off of South Cove Camp Ground.

The chief said the growth will grow back in a few weeks.
