Mother of 'Bi-Lo Baby' doesn't appear in court

Posted: Updated:

The mother accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a Bi-Lo Center bathroom was scheduled to face a judge Thursday morning in Greenville County.

FOX Carolina had a crew in the court room but Jessica Blackham didn't show.

Officials with the 13th Judicial Solicitor's Office said nothing would happen in regards to the case on Thursday.

Blackham was charged on Feb. 8, 2011, with two counts of felony child abuse and one count of unlawful neglect of a child in connection to leaving her baby in the bathroom while at the circus on Feb. 4. The baby was found by the cleaning crew.

It is not clear what Thursday's hearing was supposed to be about. Blackham was released last year on a $30,000 surety bond by a Greenville Municipal Court judge.

When she was charged, Blackham's parents told the judge that Blackham did not remember much about the events at the Bi-Lo Center and said their daughter had amnesia. Andy McAuliffe, Blackham's father, told FOX Carolina his daughter didn't know she was pregnant.

Police arrested Blackham after she turned herself in at the police station several days after the baby was found.

Investigators said they believed the baby was born in the bathroom, and the child was no more than a couple of hours old when the employee found him.

Blackham was 24 at the time of her arrest and had another 4-year-old child. The baby was taken into Department of Social Services custody, who has not disclosed who is taking care of the baby.
