Several thousand people in the Upstate and western North Carolina were without power Sunday night and Monday morning.
Duke Energy reported more than 1,800 customers without power in Spartanburg County, 1,200 in Greenville County, about 1,000 in Greenwood County, more than 3,500 in Henderson County and about 2,100 in Transylvania County on Sunday night.
Monday morning, more than 2,100 customers in Greenville were without power along with 1,600 outages in Anderson County, and more than 700 outages in both Spartanburg and Pickens counties.
Progress Energy also reported several hundred outages Monday in Buncombe, Haywood and Mitchell counties.
Officials had reported that high winds knocked down power lines and heat may have been responsible.
In Abbeville County, homes in the Calhoun Falls area saw the damage from strong winds firsthand as roofs were damaged. Spartanburg saw reports of hail while several counties saw numerous lightning strikes.
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport recorded an all-time record for the hottest day when temperatures rose to 107 degrees.
With the hot, humid weather, many Upstate and western North Carolina counties were under severe thunderstorm warnings Sunday night.
