ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anderson County deputies were called to a home on Lemans Drive in the Colony Mobile Home Park on Tuesday after a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself.

The toddler was transported to AnMed with a gunshot wound to the head.

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown identified the victim as Josiah Tate. The coroner said the child was shot around 5 p.m.

Investigators said the toddler shared the home with his mother and her boyfriend, an Anderson County Sheriff's deputy.

McCown said the deputy left his gun at the home when the boy and his mother were gone, but they returned before he got back.

That's when the coroner said Tate got the gun. McCown said by the time the boy's mother realized he had the loaded weapon, she wasn't able to get to him in time to stop him from pulling the trigger.

"I thought it was a lie," said Tiffany Harris, Josiah's cousin. "I thought he got shot with something, maybe a cap gun or something, not a real gun."

The death has been ruled accidental. An autopsy will be performed Thursday.

Because the case involves a sheriff's deputy, the State Law Enforcement Division was called in to take over the investigation.
