GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Crews have finished repairing a popular Greenville road after a sinkhole that formed because of a water main break.

Greenville police said the break happened near the intersection of Pleasantburg Drive and Villa Road about 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Because of the break, all lanes of Pleasantburg Drive were shut down between Fisher Drive and Villa Road.

Police said that two-way traffic resumed about 1:30 p.m., with a single lane available in each direction, but those lanes could be periodically shut down while crews work to repair the roadway. They said drivers should avoid the area.

On Friday morning, a crash in the construction zone slowed traffic down to a crawl for several hours.

Officials said they had hoped to have all lanes of Pleasantburg reopened by noon Friday, but there were delays in the paving process.

By 6 p.m., we're told all lanes were back open.

Most water service was restored to area businesses by Thursday evening.
