FOX Carolina's Adrian Acosta, who was at the scene, said explosions were heard at the scene of the fire. He said more fire departments were being called in because a nearby wooded area was now ablaze.
Spartanburg County deputies said the following roads were blocked because of firefighting efforts: Fairforest Road between Simuel and New Cut roads, International Drive and the entrance and exit ramps to southbound Business I-85 at Fairforest Road.
Deputies said the fire was producing heavy smoke and ash. They said people are asked to avoid the area.
Acosta said that fans, cold drinks, chairs and tents were brought in to help firefighters stay cool while fighting the blaze in the 90-plus-degree heat.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
