ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A 10-year-old boy has died after authorities said a metal grate fell on him Friday afternoon.
The Anderson County Coroner's Office said Jonathan Myalik was at a mill with his brother, sister and an adult cousin when the 10-year-old turned over a metal grate. The grate fell and hit Myalik in the head.
Grates can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds.
Myalik's family told FOX Carolina they had just bought the mill, and no one was working there at the time when the accident happened.
A cousin of Myalik said rescuers worked to revive the boy on scene before he was airlifted Friday afternoon to Greenville Memorial. The coroner said Myalik was found to be brain-dead upon arrival at the hospital. He was taken off life support Saturday morning.
His cause of death is listed as a traumatic brain injury and has been ruled an accident.
