A Rock Hill-based National Guard unit is preparing to head to Afghanistan this week.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported that more than 160 members of the 178th Combat Engineer Battalion leave Tuesday to prepare for their overseas deployment.

A departure ceremony was held Sunday at Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill.

The unit will perform a variety of engineering, construction and road clearing jobs.

The battalion commander, Lt. Col. Corol Dobson, said many of the soldiers on this deployment were hand-picked for training and deployment.
