GRAY COURT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers said a man died after he crashed while running from Laurens County deputies Monday.

The crash happened about 11:15 p.m. along Wham Lawn Road west of Gray Court. Troopers said the man was driving north when he ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree.

The sheriff's office reported that a deputy saw the driver run a stop sign, turned around and put on his blue lights to pull him over, but before he could catch up to him, the driver had crashed.

Troopers said the man later died at the hospital. The Laurens County coroner said the driver was identified as Jimmy Etris, 44, of Gray Court.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
