Wellford man accused of severely shaking infant

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said they have arrested a man after he admitting to shaking his 12-week-old son.

Spartanburg County investigators were called to Greenville Memorial Hospital on Monday after doctors said the infant suffered nonaccidental head trauma and retinal hemorrhages.

Deputies said doctors called them after the baby was readmitted to GMH's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Monday.

The infant had been discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on Thursday where he been since birth because he was born 10 weeks premature in April, deputies said.

Investigators went to the infant's biological father's place of work in Wellford and after talking with him, 21-year-old Jacob Shattuck was arrested and charged with felony child abuse inflicting great injury.

Investigators said Shattuck confessed to shaking the victim and that he knew what he had done was wrong. Shattuck is being held at the county jail on a $100,000 bond.

Deputies said no other family members of the infant's are suspects in the case, and he is still in critical condition at the hospital.
